with original music by Julian Hornik
ARDEN begins in a slightly estranged version of our current racist, misogynist, transphobic, and xenophobic culture, with a Duke whose whims last the length of a tweet, who believes locker room talk is sacred and that women should know their place. But unlike our taxing and gruesome world, this one has an escape hatch. Following the young, fiery Rosalind and their dearest, gentle best friend Celia, the audience flees to Arden: a 2020 imagining of a utopia in which identity is flexible, gender always a performance, and the dancefloor a place for revolution that teems with drag performers, camp references, and a myriad of opportunities to fall in love. Our immersive, 100-minute, original musical begins with echoes of Shakespeare’s classic comedy and moves beyond it to invite audiences to imagine a world where we can live and love as each of us likes it.
ARDEN was developed by Emma Weinstein, Michael Breslin, and Julian Hornik during the summer of 2018 and had a workshop production as Emma’s M.F.A. Directing Thesis at Yale School of Drama in October 2018, which ran for seven performances. We are continuing to develop the show. Please contact us for demos, video or more information!
